Rudd targets abortion clinic protesters
A LAW could be introduced to protect women from being harassed and intimidated at abortion clinics, it emerged last night.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd has ordered a report into protests at family planning clinics to address concerns about tactics used by demonstrators.
Evidence will be gathered from police, healthcare providers and local authorities before considering how best to protect those who use or work in the clinics.
Police already have a range of powers to manage protests, while current laws provide protection against harassment.
The Government said its review would look at ‘bolstering existing or creating new police and civil powers’.
Home Office officials will also look at how protests at abortion clinics are managed in countries such as the US, France and Australia.
Miss Rudd said: ‘While everyone has a right to peaceful protest, it is unacceptable that anyone should feel harassed or intimidated for exercising their legal right to healthcare advice and treatment.
‘The decision to have an abortion is already an incredibly personal one, without women being further pressured by aggressive protesters.
‘This review is about ensuring the police, healthcare providers and local authorities have the right powers to protect women making these tough decisions.’
