Which England player did Nasser rate 3 out of 10?

-

ENGLAND

ALASTAIR COOK 5 looks out of nick. you can tell when he is because, as a tall lad, he falls over a bit and becomes an lbw candidate. such a fine player of spin, so his struggles against nathan lyon are a surprise.

MARK STONEMAN 5 good delivery from Mitchell starc did him for pace. secondinnings shot was a concern given they are going to the bouncy Waca next — punching off the back foot away from your body is dangerous.

JAMES VINCE 3 two poor shots and repetitive nature of his dismissals are a worry. needs to toughen up mentally, let the bowler come to him and put away that angled-bat shot.

JOE ROOT 6 i don’t think the toss cost england the match. he played really well in the second innings but it’s the same old, same old with Joe. he keeps getting 50 and out. needs to set the tone with hundreds.

DAWID MALAN 5.5 he might not be blessed with eye-catching talent but at least he is trying to tough it out. australia have exposed a weakness from around the wicket, though, and that’s an area he needs to work on.

MOEEN ALI 4 i am not sure how fit he is. he is not getting the revolutions on the ball that lyon is. equally concerning is that he keeps getting out to lyon. i’d split up him and Malan and put Bairstow at no 6.

JONNY BAIRSTOW 6 Poor shot in the first innings, driving starc on the up. Before the series i wanted him at six and that has not changed. But i wouldn’t go down the road some are suggesting of taking the gloves off him.

CHRIS WOAKES 8 Vital stand with overton in the first innings when all the batters had let the side down. then he showed his class when the ball moved around under the lights.

CRAIG OVERTON 8.5 What an excellent debut: he batted, bowled and fielded really well. i enjoyed the moment on the final day when he was so cross with himself about getting out. it showed he still had belief to get england over the line.

STUART BROAD 6 only two wickets in the game and was guilty — as he has been a few times in recent years — of bowling too short with the new ball. did well under the lights again.

JAMES ANDERSON 7.5 deserved his first fivewicket haul in australia but must share blame for making his captain look silly for inserting opposition. showed his class when the ball started moving under the lights.

AUSTRALIA

DAVID WARNER 6 Played well but subdued — england have bowled well to him.

CAMERON BANCROFT 3 run out in the first innings by Warner. Very quiet game.

USMAN KHAWAJA 7 Went into the game under pressure but plays seam well.

STEVE SMITH 6 fidgety and vulnerable under lights when ball moved around. error with follow-on will be forgotten.

PETER HANDSCOMB 4 technique all over the place and is under pressure for the Waca.

SHAUN MARSH 9 looks a very organised and accomplished player.

TIM PAINE 8 Will get bounced now he has been out twice pulling, but kept well at times, especially to spin. Very important half-century.

MITCHELL STARC 8 bowled beautifully with new ball on fifth day. Big threat to the tail.

PAT CUMMINS 9 good heat, energy and variations with the ball, useful runs down the order.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD 8 only three wickets but two of them set the tone on the final morning. good reverse swing.

NATHAN LYON 9 if you talk the talk you must walk the walk, and he has. england’s lefties are clueless against him.

ENGLAND.. avg 5.9

AUSTRALIA.. avg 7.0
