SWEET AND FORTIFIED

-

NV Morrisons Ruby Port, Douro Valley, Portugal (£7, Morrisons)

THIS is the bargain port of the season and it is made by the world famous Symington family, owners of Graham’s, Dow’s and Warre’s. In spite of its lowly price tag, the fruit is pure, plummy and sweet. If you need a port to welcome in 2018, then why not save a few pounds and track down this wine?

2013 De Bortoli, Botrytis Semillon, New South Wales, Australia (£6.98, half bottle, reduced to £6 until January 4, Asda)

MADE by the most famous sweet wine specialists in Australia, there is so much honey and caramel in this wine it is unbelievable. If you can imagine a vinous version of a top-class pineapple upside-down cake, then this is it.

2014 Domaine Lasserre, Jurançon, South West France (£6.99, half bottle, Co-op)

THIS is a very rare style of wine made from a 50/50 blend of gros and petit manseng. It is not fully sweet, but tangy with lemon peel notes, so if you are not after a really sticky wine, then this is an elegant option that is at its best with fruit tarts and cupcakes.

NV Torres, Floralis Moscatel, Penedès, Spain (£7.99, 50cl bottle, reduced to £6.49 until December 26, Waitrose)

TORRES has created a style all of his own with this orange peel and caramel-soaked wine. The bottle is beautiful, the flavour is tremendous and the value is unbeatable. Drink it with sticky toffee pudding or any citrus-flavoured sweetie and you will be in dreamland.

2012 L’Or du Ciron, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France (£12.50, half bottle, Marks & Spencer)

MY FINAL wine of my 80 favourite bottles for Christmas and New Year is one of the most elegant of all. A discreet, genteel sauternes, with a mediumsweet palate and long, even flavour, you can drink this on its own, rather than with dessert, and feel very special.
