Row over police advice on ‘ how to stay with abuser’

- Daily Mail Reporter

POLICE have been criticised for Facebook posts appearing to support domestic abuse victims staying with abusive partners.

The row broke out after the Essex force posted a case study about Sheila, 65, as part of a campaign aimed at older sufferers.

It said: ‘She knew the abuse in her relationship was wrong but also knew that she wouldn’t leave.

‘ With help and support from specialist organisations and agencies, Sheila and her husband stayed together, but safely.’

One Facebook user wrote: ‘First time I’ve heard people being helped to stay in an abusive relationship.’

Another posted: ‘Such a load of rubbish, if it is abusive there is only one answer, get out now.’

Writer and food blogger Jack Monroe wrote: ‘Wow, Essex Police. I have no words for what an irresponsible, silencing, diminishing campaign this is. Basically telling women to “put up and shut up”. In 2017. This is absurd.’ An Essex

Police spokesman apologised for the ‘clumsy language that has clearly caused offence’.

He added that the 55+ Safety Net campaign was based on real stories. ‘Our message isn’t “stay in any relationship no matter how abusive”,’ the spokesman said. ‘It’s “if something is happening even if you’ve been with someone for decades, there is help you can get”.’

The campaign was launched with the Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board and featured seven scenarios.

Chairman Dick Madden said survivors had been involved and the aim was to help victims reach out for support. ‘The message is clear – domestic abuse is never acceptable,’ he added.

‘Not all cases are the same and not all victims will want to leave or consider reporting to the police.’

Sheila’s story aimed to ‘reach out to this audience and give them information about the support available, whatever their circumstances’.
