Career women are no better off than their mothers, says Kirstie
JUGGLING motherhood with a successful TV career, Kirstie Allsopp seems to have it all.
But modern women in high-powered jobs have simply created problems for themselves, she suggests – and are no better off than their mothers.
The 46-year-old has questioned the wisdom of devoting too much time to the office and revealed she never intended to work. Instead, she planned to be a stay-at-home mother with a large family.
She said: ‘In the context of talking about sexism, a lot is expected of women. Are we better off than our mothers? Not necessarily. That’s an interesting debate. Have we made a rod for our own backs?’
Miss Allsopp, who splits her time between Devon and London, has two sons with her partner Ben Andersen – 11-year-old Bay and Oscar, nine. She also has the role of stepmother for Mr Andersen’s two children from a previous relationship, Hal and Orion.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping magazine, which is on sale on January 3, she said: ‘I think that there are one or two monster myths that exist – like that bringing up children is boring.
‘I never intended to have a career. I dodged all the career sessions at school and told the careers teacher that I intended to get married and have four children.’
The Location, Location, Location presenter, who describes herself as a ‘passionate feminist’ says now that she will ‘never stop working’ and doesn’t ever plan to retire.
