Give Britain a good Brexit deal, Poland tells Brussels

- From Larisa Brown Political Correspondent in Warsaw

BRITAIN must be given a trade deal that allows the City to continue doing business in Europe, Poland demanded yesterday.

As Theresa May visited Warsaw, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki warned the EU it needed to strike an ambitious agreement ‘as soon as possible’.

He slapped down the European Commission’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier for claiming Britain could not have a special deal to protect the banking sector, saying it would be ‘dangerous’ to put up barriers stopping the UK from trading freely.

In a joint Press conference, Mr Morawiecki said his views on financial services co-operation were ‘very close’ to Mrs May’s. The PM – mistakenly called ‘Madam Brexit’ by a translator – said the talks had been productive and she was ‘encouraged’ by her counterpart’s supportive remarks.

It represents a significant boost for Mrs May, who has been trying to win the support of other EU leaders after France and Germany repeatedly cast doubt on her plans for a free trade deal.
