Merry Trumpmas!

Melania poses in Santa hat – and Donald claims he saved the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’

- From Daniel Bates in New York

WITH a provocative pout, Melania Trump posed as Santa’s little helper yesterday.

Husband Donald, however, has made a far bigger contribution to the festive season. Or so he claims.

Never one to shy away from boasting about his achievements, the President tweeted that he was proud to be saying ‘ Merry Christmas’ because he had ‘ led the charge against the assault’ on the ‘cherished and beautiful phrase’.

He suggested that the phrase ‘Happy Holidays’ had been consigned to history simply thanks to his insistence on ‘Merry Christmas’ being used in the White House.

During his election campaign Mr Trump had claimed that ‘ Merry Christmas’ had been banned by politically correct liberals who don’t want

‘Peace for the country’

to offend non-Christians. But last night critics on social media were quick to disagree and reminded him of numerous instances when Barack Obama had said ‘Merry Christmas’ – including a tweet the former President posted yesterday.

Mr Trump and his wife are spending the holiday season at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate. Yesterday Mrs Trump posted a picture of herself on Twitter with a Santa hat and several glittery reindeer overlaid on the image.

Next to it the former model added emojis showing a gingerbread man, a Christmas tree and Santa Claus.

On Christmas Eve the President and the First Lady had helped field calls from children to North American Aerospace Defense Command eager to know about the whereabouts of Santa Claus.

Some of the children were patched through to the Trumps and photos from Mar-a-Lago showed them sitting awkwardly facing away from each other on gold chairs as they answered their calls.

The President could be heard telling one child that for Christmas he wanted ‘peace for the country’.

When another child told him that he wanted Lego, Mr Trump, who made his fortune in real estate, said: ‘Oh, building blocks, that’s what I always liked too. I predict that Santa will bring you building blocks, so many you can’t use them all.’

A child who wanted their sick grandmother to get out of hospital was told: ‘That’s better than asking for some toy or something. So your grandma’s gonna be good, OK, she’s gonna be good.’
