Gaffe-prone Labour MP claims she faces challenges Churchill never did
A LABOUR MP has suggested she supports her constituents in ways Sir Winston Churchill never had to.
Laura Pidcock, who caused controversy when she said she could not be friends with Tory politicians, contrasted her role as an MP with that of the man regarded by many as Britain’s greatest prime minister.
She made the claims in an interview in which she said she had to help people struggling to survive.
‘It is a really important political point that the role of an MP’s office has fundamentally changed in the last 20 to 30 years,’ she told The Guardian. ‘I can’t really imagine someone like Winston Churchill or his staff supporting people like this.
‘I know the system was completely different then, but now it’s literally asking people, have you got food, have you got electricity, can you live through this week? We’ve got to physically help people.’
Miss Pidcock, 30, has caused controversy since she was elected MP for North West Durham in June. She said she would not ‘ hang out’ with Tory women as they are ‘the enemy’.
Considered a rising star in Labour Party, the Corbyn supporter claims to spend two-thirds of her time helping constituents who received benefits – up to 100 people at a time.
She said her workload was due to ’the collapse of all other advice and support agencies... the overloading’ of services.’
Miss Pidcock’s office did not respond to requests for comment last night.
