u2 frontman Bono has been accused of sexism after claiming the music industry today is ‘very girly’.

The 57-year-old singer said he is worried about the state of rock ‘n’ roll as young men no longer express their ‘anger’.

He told rolling Stone magazine: ‘I think music has gotten very girly. and there are some good things about that, but hip-hop is the only place for young male anger at the moment – and that’s not good. When I was 16, I had a lot of anger in me.

‘In the end, what is rock ‘n’ roll? rage is at the heart of it.’ But the comments sparked a predictably angry backlash.

While some fans appeared to agree with the Irish star, citing artists including ed Sheeran and Sam Smith as appealing more to women, others accused him of lazy stereotyping and sexism.

The Independent music critic roisin o’Connor wrote an article attacking Bono, after tweeting: ‘Where do you even start with this: The sexism? The racist stereotyping? The positioning of hyper-masculine aggression as a positive thing?’

one critic wrote on Twitter: ‘You can’t use the word “girly” any more to describe something as a bit sissy’ while another raged: ‘Has he Met any women this year?’

Last year Bono won Glamour magazine’s inaugural Man of The Year award for his humanitarian role and work with women. He said at the time: ‘The battle for gender equality can’t be won unless men lead it along with women.’
