Empty promises

-

IT’S just ten months since the French carmaker PSA took over Vauxhall, vowing not to cut jobs. Yesterday the company announced 250 redundancies at its Ellesmere Port plant, bringing the total of jobs lost there since October to 650.

PSA is just the latest foreign buyer to renege on pledges made before snapping up British- based businesses. The Government may not be able to block these takeovers but surely ministers should scrutinise them more carefully – and make sure promises on job security are not broken as soon as the deal is done.
