Celebrity Mastermind with barely a celeb in sight... let alone a mastermind
IT is meant to pit famous faces against each other in tests of general knowledge – and their specialist subjects.
But Celebrity Mastermind has been ridiculed by some viewers for featuring unknown contestants who have struggled to answer the simplest of questions.
In the latest series of the BBC1 show, specialist subjects included Kim Kardashian and Sex and the City, while four celebrities failed to reach a score of double figures.
During Friday’s edition, which included vlogger Grace Victory answering questions on Beyoncé, one viewer wrote online that the BBC had damaged the show’s integrity with ‘thick’ contestants. Another said: ‘Need to check a dictionary for definition of celebrity.’ However, others pointed out that the celebrity spin-off is for charity, and its contestants should not be judged too harshly.
The lowest scorer of the 36 players last week was actor and comedian Abdullah Afzal who said the British equivalent of the Spanish autopista and German autobahn is pistachio. He got one point for general knowledge and five overall.
The latest series has so far attracted an average audience of 3.9million. A BBC spokesman said: ‘ Celebrity Mastermind remains popular with our audiences and we are grateful to the participating celebrities who give up their time to raise awareness and funds for a variety of charities.’
