United fear Fellaini needs knee surgery

- By CHRIS WHEELER

MANCHESTER UNITED will decide today if Marouane Fellaini needs surgery to cure a persistent knee ligament problem. Fellaini (right) limped out of Wednesday night’s defeat by Tottenham at Wembley seven minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute for Jesse Lingard. The Belgian, 30, will have scans once the swelling in his left knee goes down to see if he needs an operation on the medial ligament. Surgery could rule him out for two months. It is the third time the injury has hit Fellaini since he was hurt in a World Cup qualifier against Bosnia in Sarajevo last October. He played four games in November, but aggravated the injury. Then he missed a further six weeks before attempting a comeback last month. He was making his fourth successive appearance off the bench on Wednesday. Fellaini, out of contract in the summer, is desperate to be fit for the World Cup finals in Russia.
