Undemocratic Lords

-

WITH the attempt by the House of Lords to prevent the will of the people being implemented with regard to Brexit, surely we have come to the point where we have to question the very existence of this institution.

The Lords has nothing to do with democracy. They are not elected and they represent no one except themselves, their egos and, it appears, their expense claims.

In days gone by the second chamber consisted of peers of the realm who had served the country, but today’s mixed bag of personalities makes the whole thing meaningless.

Why is there no retirement age? Surely they can find somewhere else for their afternoon nap! It has just become a cosy pensioners’ club.

J. CURTIS, Gilwern, Monmouthshire. WE NEED a referendum on getting rid of the expensive liability that is the House of Lords. We could give the money saved to the NHS.

L. BARON, Wigan, Lancs. WHY should our taxes support 800 unelected men and women, many of whom have no sort of qualification to be in the House of Lords at all? MURIEL THOMPSON,

address supplied.
