Cull of managers at Morrisons stores

MORRISONS is axing managers in a cull that could see up to 1,500 jobs lost.

The Big Four supermarket is targeting positions like warehouse managers, and introducing 1,700 lower-paid shop floor roles such as checkout workers and shelf stackers.

Morrisons has around 800 management vacancies, which leaves around 700 managers in limbo. It is the latest round of cuts as supermarkets look to battle rivals like Aldi and Lidl.

Last month, Sainsbury’s revealed thousands of in-store management roles could go just days after Tesco prepared to shed 800 jobs. This week, Marks & Spencer said more than 450 employees were at risk of losing their jobs as it plans to close up to 14 stores across the UK.

The move by Morrisons is understood to be an attempt to make managerial responsibilities fairer, with the focus on having enough staff on the shop floor to serve customers.
