Fair to mizzling
HOW fascinating to see the list of dialect words for the weather (Mail), particularly for when it is raining.
In Devon, when it is mizzling, it is
not chucking it down: it is somewhere between a mist and a drizzle.
P. MURCH, Tiverton, Devon. IN HULL, the term for heavy rain is siling down, which I have never heard anywhere else. It is said to have been introduced by the Vikings.
L. BARRETT, Beverley, E. Yorks. MY MOTHER always uses the Essex term ponkling.
P. A. COLLINS, Grays, Essex. MY FAMILY favourite is: ‘It’s pizzitavly possing down!’
S. EVERITT, Cannock, Staffs.
