FURY BAN COST DOPE CHIEFS £600k
TYSON FURY’S drug case cost UK Anti-Doping nearly £600,000 in legal fees. The former heavyweight champion and his cousin Hughie accepted backdated two-year bans in December for failing tests for the steroid nandrolone two years ago, despite insisting it was the result of eating uncastrated wild boar. Their case was notable for the long delay between test and charge, which did not come until June 2016. The settlement was seen as a compromise between UKAD’s desire to apply the rules and limit legal costs. UKAD chief executive Nicole Sapstead said: ‘The money shows if there is evidence of doping, we will pursue a case, regardless of their public profile or status.’ She added that UKAD should be able to recoup £250,000 from their legal insurance.
