The saddest photo you’ll ever see...

Widower weeps alone as he takes late wife’s ashes for Valentine’s Day lunch

- Mail Foreign Service

IT is Valentine’s Day and the restaurant table is set for two – two plates, two sets of cutlery and two glasses of white wine.

Yet the only diner is a man, sitting alone and in tears, and wiping his eyes with a napkin.

This could just be the most heartbreaking picture of a Valentine’s Day meal.

For the man eating lunch alone on the most romantic day of the year is sharing his date... with the ashes of his late wife.

Opposite him is a container with her ashes inside. A greeting card with the words ‘you & me’ on the cover stands between them. This picture was taken at a restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, and shared on Facebook, where it has attracted 445,000 likes and was shared 360,000 times.

Chasidy Gwaltney, who posted the photo, wrote: ‘This man looks like he is spending Valentine’s Day alone at first glance but that is actually his wife in that very beautiful bottle sitting on the table.

‘Apparently his love for her was and still is very strong as he takes her ashes out for a Valentine’s lunch date together. He even bought her a glass of wine.’

She added: ‘Please love your Sweetheart while you have the opportunity, you never know what tomorrow will bring or take away! We are all guilty of taking our other half for granted from time to time. We may forget to give a goodbye kiss, say I love you or just be so caught up in what we are doing at the moment that we don’t notice the very little things that mean so much to our special someone.

‘I saw something today that has made me remember that we won’t always have each other to hold, talk to, love, play with or even just aggravate every now and then. This picture speaks loudly and it may hurt your heart as it has mine.’

The photograph, which has not been verified, was picked up online by thousands. One of them commented: ‘I understand his feelings completely. My husband passed away 12 years ago. I miss him every day.’
