Don’t listen to yesterday men Blair and Major
JOHN MAJOR and Tony Blair share the greatest responsibility for placing this country in the mess it finds itself with the EU.
When they were in power, they denied the people a referendum before the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties were signed. They would also have taken us into the euro if they could, again without the people having a say.
They have a vested, reputational interest in keeping us in the EU.
In our democracy, the will of the people stands above the Crown, Parliament, the Government, the Westminster village and the BBC. The referendum result expressed the clear will of the electorate.
Our politicians need to get on with resolving the complex problem they have brought about. Keep the soles of their feet to the fire until they sort it out. CHRISTOPHER G. PARKER,
Guildford, Surrey. JUST when we needed a Margaret Thatcher, we got a John Major. BRIAN CHRISTLEY,
Abergele, Conwy. SO JOHN Major wants a free vote in the House of Commons on the final Brexit deal and another referendum (Mail).
He was the Prime Minister who forced the Maastricht Treaty through on a vote of confidence because he did not have a majority — not much sign of asking the people on that issue, was there?
The Maastricht Treaty set the EU on the road to becoming a superstate. Major allowed Spain to join the EU without first settling the status of Gibraltar.
He also wasted billions of pounds intervening in the currency markets trying to keep sterling in the ERM on Black Wednesday. Some silence from him would be very welcome. MARTIN ARMSTRONG,
Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
