Bright sparks left me feeling shirty

-

SoMe years ago while on holiday in Yorkshire, we visited Settle station to watch a steam train pass through. on arriving at the station, my husband and I stood among a small crowd on the platform and chatted to the other steam fans. Suddenly, one shouted ‘it’s coming!’ and pointed down the long straight train line where — in the distance — a tiny white puff of smoke was just visible. the conversation grew louder and more excited while we all stood gazing as the train became visible and drew nearer and nearer. Finally, the driver blew the whistle and the steam engine came puffing through, billowing clouds of white smoke. I stood completely enveloped and smelt the old familiar smell from years ago when I was a young girl and steam trains were the norm. I was filled with nostalgia — until the smoke cleared and the train had gone. I moved to the exit and, glancing down, I saw to my horror that my expensive blouse, which I had worn for the occasion, was scattered all over with tiny brown holes from the sparks. I’ll always remember that day — for the demise of my favourite blouse!
