Are we in danger of running out of gas?

-

AFTER only a few days of cold weather, we were being told to go easy on our use of gas as supplies were running low (Mail). What an indictment of the way this country is being held to ransom by foreign energy suppliers. It’s time the Government pulled its socks up and gave the go-ahead to companies who want to extract gas by fracking so we can be independent in energy. Just ignore the tree huggers who oppose it. Wind and sun will never supply our energy needs. We never used to have a problem with energy supplies, even in the harshest winter, when we had ample supplies of coal, which in our wisdom we decided to get rid of.

ERIC CROSS, Hullbridge, Essex. WHICH clever ministers decided to close the largest North Sea gas storage facility? BRIAN BEST, High Wycombe, Bucks.

THERE are plenty of old gas bags in the houses of Parliament.

BOB REEVES, Billericay, Essex. RUNNING out of gas? This shows how badly energy companies plan for emergencies. In order to be selfsufficient in energy, the answer is fracking. Yes, there are safety and environmental issues, but the reality is we have energy problems and we can’t rely on Europe or Russia. We have lived for years with OPEC blackmailing us with oil.

S. T. VAUGHAN, Birmingham.

DURING the cold weather we used more gas to heat our homes, so the gas companies got more profit. So why are they putting up the price? Shouldn’t they reduce it? We are being taken for mugs.

ALAN JACOBS, Biddenham, Beds.

I THOUGHT the utility companies bought gas more than a year in advance, so surely prices shouldn’t rise for 12 months.

E. JONES, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.
