Should EU keep the right to fish in UK waters?

-

WHY has the Government made it obvious it will give away our fishing rights? A return of sovereignty was a key reason many of us voted to leave the EU. Why is the Government giving away bargaining chips? It’s crazy to make concessions without payback. Can we please get a few top businessmen to bargain for us and stop politicians giving away everything for free?

MAC McCAllUM, Eastbourne, E. Sussex. THE EU wants to continue fishing in Scottish waters and take 60 per cent of the stock of quality fish as part of the Brexit negotiations. The UK negotiation team has already put £49 billion on the table as our parting payment, but now the EU is trying to cherry-pick the best bits of our existing agreements. Scottish fishermen have been looking forward to the prospect of a post-Brexit fishing bonanza, but are wary of the SNP commitment to re-join the EU and sacrifice our fish stocks.

DENNIS FORBES GRATTAN, Aberdeen.

ON BEHALF of UK fishermen, the Government should tell the EU to sling its hook.

JONATHAN SALT, Elsham, lincs. THE Chancellor Philip Hammond speaks of trading away access to our fishing grounds. Meanwhile, institutional shareholders will decide the fate of 22,000 GKN employees. This is not the way to ‘Build a Better Britain’. It is not even the way to build a sandcastle!

FREDERICK WEBB, Milford-on-Sea, Hants.

I HAVE no problem with a deal that allows EU countries to continue to fish in British waters after Brexit — just as long as British farmers can harvest French grapes, Spanish oranges and help themselves to Italian olive oil.

ANDY BAULF, Calne, Wilts.
