Top dog Edmund crashes out

Kyle edmund suffered defeat in his first match since replacing Andy murray as British no 1, losing 6-4, 6-4 against Israel’s dudi Sela in the BnP Paribas Open. edmund, out of action with a hip injury since reaching the Australian Open semifinals in January, led 3-1 in the opening set at Indian Wells and had two break points to go further ahead. However, world no 97 Sela held serve and then broke edmund, before another break in the 10th game secured the set. He won the match in 91 minutes. The Williams sisters, meanwhile, will meet for the first time since last year’s Australian Open final after new mum Serena saw off former French Open semi-finalist Kiki Bertens 7-6, 7-5 in the second round, also at Indian Wells. It will be the 29th time she has played Venus.
