I’ve warmed to the ice maidens
FROZEN is hot property on Broadway. Caissie Levy and Patti Murin star as misfit siblings Elsa and Anna.
Elsa is branded a monster because she has an amazing power she can’t control — until she decides, in the words of the award-winning hit song by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, to Let It Go.
As I said in a tweet I zinged out after seeing Frozen on Broadway last Saturday night, it’s a beautiful love story . . . about two sisters. I couldn’t get over how brilliantly Levy and Murin work together. They, and director Michael Grandage, have concentrated on digging deeper into the relationship so you understand why Anna endures freezing weather, to help the sister she adores.
Grandage told me the show’s also about ‘empowerment’. ‘ Two women at the centre of a major Broadway musical doesn’t happen often,’ he added.
When I saw Frozen in Denver in September it lacked heart. Now it is tighter and lighter, and I will happily see it again to work out how a bit of theatre magic involving Caissie’s act one costume change is achieved. Pure alchemy!
