90 England fans arrested

GARETH SOUTHGATE was full of praise for his players last night — but England’s win in Holland was marred by crowd trouble in Amsterdam.

Jesse Lingard’s strike was enough to secure victory in Ronald Koeman’s first game as Holland manager.

But the morale-boosting win was overshadowed by misbehaviour from England fans outside the stadium earlier in the day.

Dutch police, as of last night, had made 90 arrests in connection with disturbances in the Dutch capital. It is understood a member of a police support unit was injured during the flashpoints.

The Football Association communicated their wish for supporters to behave in Amsterdam amid fears of trouble, but many fans ignored those pleas.

In the stadium, England fans were heard booing the Dutch national anthem and Southgate said: ‘I heard some of the booing, which isn’t acceptable. The rest, that’s the first I’ve heard of.

‘Without knowing the details, it’s not something I want to hear. Our players have represented their country really well tonight with pride and some style. Anything that takes away from that performance would be a great shame.’ On the pitch, England produced a promising display, largely dominating the Dutch in their own backyard.

And Southgate said: ‘It was a good test for us, we came away from home and controlled the game.

‘We used the ball really well for 60-65 minutes, maybe more quality in the final third was required but we were very solid. We had some good play up to that final ball.

‘The back three were excellent and the goalkeeper too, the way they were able to play from the back, they played with real composure, and played with intelligence too.

‘Playing three at the back is partly system and partly personnel, the defenders and goalkeeper are all capable of using the ball really well and we worked out the game tactically to keep the ball higher up. But there are more things we want to see in the Italy game on Tuesday.’

Describing his second-half strike from 20 yards out after the ball came off a Holland defender, Lingard said: ‘It took a bit of time, I had to concentrate on it and I kind of gave the keeper the eyes.’

Captain Jordan Henderson added: ‘ The first hour I thought we dominated on the ball and possibly could have created a bit more.

‘Second half they changed their formation to stop us a bit but when the ball dropped to Jesse I knew he’d score.’
