SHE has one of the best-known faces in British film and television.

But even Emma Thompson’s biggest fans might have had to look twice before they recognised her in this picture.

The two-time Oscar winner wore a pinstriped black and white trouser suit with a silky white camisole underneath. Her hair, peroxide blonde, was cropped and slicked back from her face in a masculine style.

She also added a touch of star power to her outfit with a pair of £630 Stella McCartney silver ‘flatform’ – flat with a platform sole – brogues with white star details. Miss Thompson was attending the screening of a new BBC adaptation of King Lear. She plays Lear’s ambitious and cruel eldest daughter Goneril.

With Miss Thompson was 22-yearold rising star Florence Pugh, who plays Lear’s youngest daughter, Cordelia. Sir Anthony Hopkins, 80, leads the cast as Lear. Sherlock actor Andrew Scott plays Edgar.

Emily Watson, 51, who starred in BBC1 drama Apple Tree Yard last year, plays Lear’s other daughter, Regan. The film is due to be broadcast on BBC2 this spring.

Miss Thompson and Sir Anthony have worked together twice before – in a film of EM Forster’s Howard’s End in 1992 and in 1993 on the film of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains Of The Day.

A seasoned Shakespearean actress, Miss Thompson also starred in film versions of Henry V in 1989 and Much Ado About Nothing in 1993, both of them with her first husband Sir Kenneth Branagh. She remarried in 2003, to the actor Greg Wise.
