Timid Theresa

-

THERESA MAY stood outside 10 Downing Street when she became Prime Minister and declared she was going to make our country great again and would put our industry to the fore. She has either lost her way or her memory is letting her down.

She is not giving priority to our fishermen by reclaiming our fishing grounds and is not supporting two British companies, passport printer De La Rue and engineering firm GKN, that have a history of success. We need such companies to build and expand our industry.

Does the Government not care about how we will fare as a country after Brexit?

G. M. LAVERICK, Penrith, Cumbria. AS A former apprentice who spent 40-plus years as an engineer, I was encouraged to hear Theresa May’s comments regarding the future for apprenticeships after Brexit.

However, her response to the potential break-up of GKN and our fishing industry has been lacklustre.

Her French and American counterparts have shown a more patriotic approach in supporting their nation’s companies. Without the businesses we have built up over the years, our future is bleak.

JOHN KEARVELL, Somerset. HOW naive is Business Secretary Greg Clark? He has written to Melrose to ask for cast-iron guarantees regarding the future of GKN.

Does he not recall the ‘guarantees’ given by other companies in takeovers that were not worth the paper they were written on? The only guarantee Mr Clark can rely on is if he does not permit the takeover.

DAVID JACKSON, Bushey, Herts.
