YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some from our report last week on families being fined up to £2,000 for mistakenly claiming child benefit . . .

THE rules on this benefit do not make sense. A family in which both parents earn £49,000 is given the full amount of child benefit. But a family with only one working parent, earning £60,000, doesn’t receive a penny. How is that fair? R. G., Northampton. THE tax system in this country is unfair and it is difficult to reason with HM Revenue & Customs. But the families who complain about money being clawed back should consider what it is like living on the minimum or living wage. P. D., Oxfordshire. I WAS under the impression that child benefit was brought in after the war to encourage families to have children. What is the point of it now? HMRC should incorporate it into tax credits or universal credit where income is checked. N. I., Preston, Lancs. CHILD benefit should only be used to help the needy. Someone earning £49,000 shouldn’t receive this. D. M., London. IT WOULD be nice if HMRC pursued tax- dodging multinationals with as much vigour as it does ordinary citizens. J. K., Cambridgeshire. ÷ WRITE to Tony Hazell at Ask Tony, Money Mail, Northcliffe House, 2 Derry Street, London W8 5TT or email asktony@dailymail.co.uk — please include your daytime phone number, postal address and a separate note addressed to the offending organisation giving them permission to talk to Tony Hazell.
