Choir’s no cop-out
I CAN understand both sides of the row about the Derbyshire Constabulary male Voice Choir (mail).
Several years ago, the metropolitan Police male Voice Choir, of which I was a member, was asked by the Commissioner to investigate having a mixed choir.
We needed at least 20 women to balance the choir of 30 men, but only eight attended the first meeting, with three the following week. A mixed choir was a non-starter.
However, over the years numbers in the male voice choir dwindled so much we were in danger of folding. We advertised for new members, male and female, and today we have a mixed choir of 60. We have renamed ourselves the metropolitan Police Choir and sing in uniform.
Our music has changed to incorporate mixed voices, but we also sing separate male voice and female numbers in our concerts.
