Millions of Brits fight for breath on the stairs

-

GETTING around the house might be something younger, fitter people take for granted, but three in ten Britons admit to gasping for air after something as simple as walking up a flight of stairs, a study has found.

Research reveals the average adult will be left feeling breathless six times a week, often as a result of light-to-moderate exercise.

Four in ten have had to take a breather after running for a bus, while a quarter get out of breath during sex.

Another 16 per cent say that playing with a child is enough to leave them puffed out and nearly one in ten struggles to pick something up from the floor without needing to catch their breath afterwards.

Now the British Lung Foundation, which carried out the study of more than 2,000 adults, wants to encourage people to take a simple online breath test to see if they need to see a GP.

It’s at: www.blf.org.uk/ breathtest.

The aim is to reassure people who don’t have a problem, and guide those with significant breathlessness to step forward and make that appointment.

FEELING breathless and light-headed on the stairs is something you might experience as the years go on. With a single change, a stairlift does away with the struggle, and sometimes the pain, of breathlessness here. And even if you don’t use it every time, it’s there when you need it. A fall on the stairs is something everyone would want to avoid, especially as they get older. So for safety’s sake, a stairlift makes sense. All the journey upstairs will involve is fastening the seatbelt, then, at the touch of a switch, gliding smoothly and effortlessly up to the landing. It means you can safeguard your self-reliance. And your family will feel relieved, too. Why rely on others to see you up and down the stairs, when you can make your own way up in comfort and safety? With a stairlift, you can single-handedly make life far easier.
