Rio in pay row after deaths
MininG firm Rio Tinto has been slammed for giving its bosses a bonus in 2017, even after two workers died. The firm responded at its annual meeting by saying that a new policy means no short-term bonuses will be paid if there is a fatality in future.
Chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques earned £3.6m last year.
London shareholders voted on whether to approve the bonanza yesterday, but the results will not be announced until after a meeting for Australian investors in Melbourne next month.
investor advisory group Glass Lewis urged opposition to the payouts because of the deaths.
