THE STORY BEHIND Panton chair by Vitra

- JENNY COAD

WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS? Danish designer Verner Panton (1926-1998) created the chair in collaboration with Vitra in 1967. It is also known as the S, thanks to its curvy shape.

IT’S PLASTIC? Yes. It was the first chair to be made from a single piece — one reason why it’s special. SO IT CAN BE USED OUTSIDE? Yes. It comes in a range of vibrant colours, perfect for al fresco. And, handily, it stacks. WHAT ELSE WAS PANTON

FAMOUS FOR? Lighting and his use of colour. ‘The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most live in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colours,’ he said.

ANYTHING ELSE? Kate Moss was pictured naked on a red S for the cover of Vogue in 1995.

SO CAN I BUY IT? Yes. The Panton Chair is £225, and a junior version is £138, heals.com.
