WITHOUT a clock on the route in Chicago to let him know how close he was to world-record pace, British runner Steve Jones fell milliseconds short of Carlos Lopes’s time of 2hr 7min 12sec. Lopes had beaten the Welshman’s old record six months earlier, but Jones’s time of 2hr 7min 13sec in 1985 set a British record that would stand for 33 years — and earned him a cheque for £41,000
