New inquiry call for ‘spy in bag’
POLICE should re-examine the death of the ‘spy in the bag’ Gareth Williams, a former Scotland Yard detective said.
Colin Sutton, one of the most senior officers involved in the original inquiry, said this was necessary in light of the Salisbury nerve agent attack.
Detectives were unable to establish whether foreign agents were involved in Mr Williams’s death. However, Mr Sutton said he strongly suspects ‘third-party involvement’ and that the intelligence agencies may have hidden evidence.
The death of Mr Williams, 26, in August 2010 remains a mystery despite several police inquiries. His body was found in a padlocked red holdall in his London flat.
Mr Williams had been seconded from GCHQ to MI6 and is believed to have been helping trace the Russian mafia’s moneylaundering routes. His death is one of 14 reportedly highlighted by US intelligence as potentially having Russian involvement. The Metropolitan Police said it did not plan to review the case.
