Will Ireland need a border after Brexit?

-

HOW many times do we have to tell the EU that the UK won’t accept a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. There’s no reason why we should be forced to have one. It’s the EU’s problem as it wants to protect its single market and the onus should be on Dublin to decide whether, as an EU member, it wants to create a border.

ANGUS MACMILLAN, Balloch, Dunbartonshire.

WHY not tell the EU and Ireland that we will leave our side of the border as it is. It will be up to them to manage their side.

ALAN STACKMAN, Calne, Wilts. WHY is the Irish border such a problem for the UK? The EU decision has to be acceptable to Ireland or they can veto it. PETER WALLER, Forest Green, Surrey.

THE UK needs to do nothing to create a border, hard or soft, in Ireland. The Republic and Northern Ireland would make a fortune as the transit countries for EU goods. If the Irish Government and the EU become unhappy with an open border, the obligation to solve it lies with them, not with us.

ROGER EARL, Richmond, Surrey. A GOOD solution to the Irish border issue would be the creation of an Anglo-Irish trade area. All parts of the UK would be able to trade with the Republic of Ireland and vice versa. The Republic would be able to continue to trade with the rest of the EU and the rest of the world. This a special situation that deserves a special solution.

COLIN BOWER, New Milton, Hants.

IS IT seriously being suggested that EU troops would man a border in Ireland and build customs posts? What kind of reception do you think they would receive?

KEITH JENKINS, London EC2.
