Deerhounds were once known as the royal dogs of Scotland, as only nobles were allowed to keep them

The breed was a favourite of Queen Victoria and author Sir Walter Scott

Originally bred to hunt deer, they are quick off the mark when they spot potential prey. Owners are advised to take care when wildlife is nearby

The average male grows 2ft tall and weighs 100lb

Loyal but stubborn, they have been placed on the UK’s native vulnerable breed list, although their numbers are increasing steadily
