Duke in security pledge after fight

- MARCUS TOWNEND

THE DUKE of Richmond, owner of Goodwood racecourse, has promised to invest in track security in a letter to annual members after the scenes of violence at the course last Saturday. Sussex police have appealed for witnesses to a brawl estimated to involve around 50 people which left four needing hospital treatment and damaged Goodwood’s genteel image. The Duke wrote: ‘I am very sorry some of you experienced the intolerable incident at our opening Saturday fixture. I was there with my family and was shocked by what happened, which was very challenging for even the most experienced of security teams. ‘I will be reviewing what happened with my team and Sussex Police. We will do whatever is necessary, and invest whatever is required, to maintain the safety and security of all of our members and customers.’
