McClaren poised to oust Holloway at QPR

- LAURIE WHITWELL

STEvE McCLAREN is set to become the new Queens Park Rangers manager. QPR have agreed for McClaren to succeed Ian Holloway, who ended the season with three wins in nine to finish 16th. Positive talks have been held and it is understood McClaren has indicated an eagerness to take the post. QPR must first sort out Holloway’s exit as he insisted he wanted to see out the final year of his contract. A family bereavement for the 55-year-old has so far delayed a meeting with the club’s hierarchy. McClaren, 57, is also said to be exploring other options but QPR have worked to try to bring about a swift succession. The former England manager is keen to work again in British football after leaving a position as coaching consultant at Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv in December. QPR owner Tony Fernandes is fond of McClaren after his short spell at the club in the summer of 2013 working on Harry Redknapp’s coaching staff. McClaren then left to take charge at Derby, where he lost the 2014 Championship play-off final to Redknapp’s QPR. McClaren subsequently experienced a difficult time at Newcastle, only to return to Derby for a second stint in 2016. He was sacked from Pride Park in March 2017.
