. . . BUT BUYING IT WON’T BE SO EASY

- By LAURA LAMBERT

SHAHID KHAN is likely to face rival bidders in his quest to buy Wembley, and his £1billion offer for the stadium is far from a done deal. Insiders have told Sportsmail that it is widely expected that others ‘will come knocking on the door’ and a formal sale process could be required. It is understood that the offer from Khan — multi-billionaire owner of Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham — has sparked interest among other potential buyers. There might come a point where a deadline is set for further bids to be accepted, but the door is still open. Khan had seemed confident he would own the stadium by the beginning of the summer, yet it is not a foregone conclusion. Although they accept there is no chance of agreement within Khan’s original forecast of eight weeks, sources dismiss recent reports that a deal might not take place until 2019. One insider said: ‘It won’t be eight weeks, but it won’t be eight months either.’ The World Cup in Russia and the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee meeting on July 18 mean that the earliest date a deal could be sealed would be the end of that month.
