Currys shoppers hit with £22 stealth fee for unwanted cover
THOUSANDS of Currys PC World customers have complained about ‘ sneaky’ monthly payments leaving their bank accounts.
Customers say they have been charged between £1.99 and £22 a month for ‘product support’ after buying a TV or computer. This is insurance that promises to repair or replace a faulty item.
But some say they turned down the offer of cover — or were never told about it.
One says he was told the insurance was free when he bought a £400 laptop. But it, in fact, cost £5.99 a month after an introductory period.
In some cases, these fees have gone unnoticed for years, costing one customer almost £1,500. Another says Currys has continued to take money even after they asked for the cover to be cancelled.
Almost 2,300 complaints have now been posted
on the consumer website aspokesmansaid.com.
Currys PC World was forced to apologise in March after customers said they had been pressured into paying £40 more than the ticket price for laptops.
Meanwhile, last year, Money Mail found customers were refused refunds for damaged goods unless they were returned within 48 hours.
A Currys spokesman says: ‘ We are disappointed by these complaints and are taking them seriously.
‘Our colleagues are trained to provide accurate and useful information about Care Plan.’
