THE World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace this winter will include two women and a £2.5million prize fund following a shake-up by Barry Hearn.

The introduction of female competitors comes five months after walk- on girls were banned following complaints from television companies and accusations of sexism.

now, the Ally Pally tournament’s overall player field will rise from 72 to 96 with two spots going to women, and the winner will receive £500,000 of the £2.5m.

Speaking yesterday, darts supremo Hearn said: ‘The game is ready for the next big push. We’re always looking at how we can push the boundaries.’

Asked if there are any concerns over the behaviour of Ally Pally fans, given their reputation as a raucous crowd, PDC chairman Hearn added: ‘you can’t say no wolf whistles because that would be a red rag to a bull. A woman playing should not be treated any differently. I’ve got to be realistic. I hope in time they will get the respect they deserve.

‘It was important to guarantee two places for female players. Combined with the leading professional talent, rising stars from around the world and new faces through the qualifiers, it promises to be an incredible tournament.’

World no 1 Michael van gerwen added: ‘Bigger, better for darts. That’s what it’s all about. I don’t like losing to anyone but why would a woman not be as good as a man?’

This is the first time two women are guaranteed to be involved. gayl King and Anastasia Dobromyslova featured in 2001 and 2009 after qualifying.
