Low’s a winner, so ditching Sane may not be mad
ON THE face of it, that Germany have left out Leroy Sane and picked Mesut Ozil in their World Cup squad may appear strange. Sane was a dynamic presence in a brilliant Manchester City team this season, Ozil his underwhelming self for Arsenal. Joachim Low’s choices seem inexplicable to those familiar with the Premier League. Yet Low isn’t taking Manchester City to Russia, he’s taking Germany. And he sees both players in action for their country and in matches every day. Sane started Germany’s recent friendlies with Brazil and Austria, both of which were lost, lasting 61 and 67 minutes respectively. Had he impressed, one presumes he would be on the plane. Low has not failed to reach at least the semi-final in five tournaments and is the first coach of a European nation to win the World Cup in South America. You never know, he might actually have a clue.
