Stowaway migrant foils smugglers
TWO drug smugglers were caught with £2.6million of cocaine and cannabis in their lorry after an illegal immigrant who had sneaked on board was spotted at the Channel Tunnel.
British Border Force officers stopped the vehicle on the French side of the tunnel when scanners detected the migrant, whose presence was not known to the smugglers.
Officers found the drugs when they searched the lorry being used by Dutch national Antonius Hendriks, 50, and his assistant Rene Neuteboom, 35, to travel to the UK under the pretence of being a stock-car racing team.
The pair admitted importing drugs at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday. Hendriks was jailed for just under 11 years and Neuteboom for nine.
The migrant, whose nationality is not known, was handed over to the French authorities.
