Stow­away mi­grant foils smug­glers

TWO drug smug­glers were caught with £2.6mil­lion of co­caine and cannabis in their lorry af­ter an il­le­gal im­mi­grant who had sneaked on board was spot­ted at the Chan­nel Tun­nel.

Bri­tish Border Force of­fi­cers stopped the ve­hi­cle on the French side of the tun­nel when scan­ners de­tected the mi­grant, whose pres­ence was not known to the smug­glers.

Of­fi­cers found the drugs when they searched the lorry be­ing used by Dutch na­tional An­to­nius Hen­driks, 50, and his as­sis­tant Rene Neuteboom, 35, to travel to the UK un­der the pre­tence of be­ing a stock-car rac­ing team.

The pair ad­mit­ted im­port­ing drugs at Can­ter­bury Crown Court yes­ter­day. Hen­driks was jailed for just un­der 11 years and Neuteboom for nine.

The mi­grant, whose na­tion­al­ity is not known, was handed over to the French au­thor­i­ties.
