Winston Churchill’s great­grand­son, Arthur Soames, ad­mits he strug­gles to live up to his fa­mous fore­bear. ‘There’s no way i’ve read all of his work. But the best i’ve read is My Early Life,’ he tells me. ‘By his mid-20s he’d fought on three con­ti­nents, been in the last ever cav­alry charge, was cap­tured by the Bo­ers in South Africa and lived down a mine shaft for two weeks. ‘i’m 28 and i can barely get out of bed in the morn­ings.’
