Dominic the rebel
Some of us in Beaconsfield think it is high time that the local Conservative Association reminded our mP that he was elected on a Conservative Party ticket and not on a Dominic Grieve ticket.
If mr Grieve feels so strongly about europe, his proper course is to step down as the mP and fight a by-election as an independent.
Like most lawyers, he talks grandly about parliamentary sovereignty yet ignores the fact that ultimate sovereignty rests with the electorate. mr Grieve, who sits for a safe seat, clearly needs a lesson in democracy.
LAURANCE REED, Beaconsfield, Bucks. It mUSt be made clear by local party chiefs that if tory rebels defeat the Government over the Withdrawal Bill amendment this week, they will not be selected to stand in the next General election.
By fighting the last election on a manifesto pledge of leaving the single market and customs union, and then doing their best to block it, the rebels made fools of the people who selected them and the constituents who elected them.
Anna Soubry and Dominic Grieve can’t accept they were on the losing side, and the only solution is to tell them to get their CVs into the marketplace ready for a career change.
However, I suggest they don’t use the phrase: ‘I pride myself on being a good team player.’
