The Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy’s largest ever carrier and launched only last December, was returning from her latest trials, so crew can get used to her and stretch their sea legs. But they were no doubt holding their breath as the £3.1billion ship, which weighs 65,000 tons and has a 70-metre wide flight deck, approached the port. The ship, which has 650 crew, is expected to stay in Portsmouth for a couple of weeks before she sails to the US later this summer.
