ENGLAND beat Australia 5-0 for the first time in any format. It is only the second time they have won a one-day series by that margin: they beat Zimbabwe in 2004-05. AUSTRALIA have now lost 16 of their last 18 completed one-day internationals, including nine out of 10 against England. This is only their second 5-0 defeat in a one-day series, after they were whitewashed in South Africa in 2016-17. JOS BUTTLER faced at least 100 balls in a one-day international for the first time. His previous five ODI hundreds had all come at better than a run a ball. OPENERS Jason Roy (304 runs) and Jonny Bairstow (300) were England’s leading runscorers, but Buttler was dismissed only twice in making 275 runs — and he scored his runs at a strike-rate of 112. ENGLAND’S spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid played a central role in the whitewash, collecting 24 wickets between them at a combined average of 59. They were also economical. Moeen conceded an average of 5.09 an over, the tightest figures of the series, Rashid 5.60. TIM PAINE’S run-out for 1 took his total runs scored across the five games to 36 — the lowest haul in a five-match series for an Australian captain. THIS was only England’s second one-wicket victory over Australia. The first instance also took place at Old Trafford, eight years ago, when Tim Bresnan and Jimmy Anderson put on an unbeaten 11 for the last wicket.
