CHRIS SUTTON’S BOOTROOM:
FINAL GROUP GAMES
AUSTRALIA v PERU
GROUP C 3pm SOCHI, ITV4 Peru lost narrowly to France and were desperately unlucky against Denmark. Sloppy finishing has cost them — they had 17 shots against the Danes and 10 against the French, but suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats. Peru will be deflated and are now playing for pride. australia still have something to play for, and I can see them edging this game. n SUTTON’S VERDICT: Australia win 1-0.
DENMARK v FRANCE
GROUP C 3pm LUZHNIKI, ITV1 DenMarK trail France by two points and can top the group if they win. Didier Deschamps’ side have not really shown their full potential, given their attacking prowess, but they will want to keep their winning run going. The Danes are disciplined, and Kasper Schmeichel has shown fine form, but France will have too much quality for them. n SUTTON’S VERDICT: France win 2-0.
ICELAND v CROATIA
GROUP D 7pm ROSTOV, BBC4 CroaTIa are a lot of people’s dark horses for this World Cup. They secured a comfortable 3-0 win over argentina, which confirmed their qualification for the last 16. Because of that, Croatia may switch off a little bit in this one. Iceland will show their usual grit and determination, and sneak a draw. n SUTTON’S VERDICT: 1-1.
NIGERIA v ARGENTINA
GROUP D 7pm ST PETERSBURG, BBC1 THIS has been a disastrous tournament for argentina so far. They were gifted a lifeline by nigeria beating Iceland, but now they have to win to stay in with a chance of getting out of Group D. They have a manager in Jorge Sampaoli who is under incredible pressure. It will be close but I’m backing argentina’s big players to step up and see out a win. n SUTTON’S VERDICT: Argentina win 3-2.
