Police smash car window to free over-heating dogs
POLICE officers were forced to smash into a car to rescue two labradors trapped inside the blazing hot vehicle.
The dogs were left in the car outside York Hospital for 30 minutes in Monday’s searing heat.
The two policemen said the car was so hot even they ‘struggled to breathe’ when they went inside to save the distressed pets.
An investigation has now been launched by the RSPCA, which is also looking after the animals.
North Yorkshire Police said on Twitter: ‘The window was smashed and the owners will be prosecuted by @RSPCAYORK. ‘There is no excuse for this. They added: ‘Officers were in that car for 30 seconds and were struggling to breathe so goodness knows what these poor animals were going through.
‘Do not leave you dog in a hot car on a sunny day! How many warnings do you need?’
A spokesman for the RSPCA confirmed the dogs are now in their care.
It said in a statement: ‘When we arrived police had already removed two labradors from the vehicle.
‘The dogs were taken to the vets for treatment for heat exhaustion and now remain in RSPCA care.’
The RSPCA say that on a warm day a car can become ‘as hot as an oven. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour.’
