Rush-hour horror: Driver and passenger killed as bus hits lorry
A yesterday BUS driver and when a passenger a double-decker were killed ploughed into the side of a lorry.
Twelve others were injured – five seriously – in the rush-hour crash.
The bus smashed into the lorry which was pulling out of its depot on to a busy 60mph road in Cambridgeshire about 7.30am. Although residents said it had been foggy, police said the weather had not contributed to the crash. The driver, a man in his 50s from Norfolk, and the passenger, a man in his 70s from Northamptonshire, were declared dead at the scene on the A47 at Guyhirn, near Wisbech. Other passengers were treated in hospital for head injuries and broken bones but none were critical. A threemile stretch of the road was closed for most of the day as inquiries continued. The lorry driver was questioned at the scene but not arrested. A police spokesman described the scene as ‘horrendous’. Bretts Transport, which owns the lorry, said it was cooperating with police. First Eastern Counties, the bus operator, said it would provide support to the victims’ families.
