University challenged

-

CoNGrATuLATIoNS to Tom utley for his comments on Field Marshal rommel (Mail). This outstanding strategist and commander in the German army during World War II deserves his good reputation.

Who are these ‘experts’ at Exeter university who didn’t recognise his name when putting together a list of inspirational quotes? hopefully none were from the history department.

V. a. cHOwn, liverpool. MY FAThEr, while serving with the Sussex regiment, was injured by shrapnel whilst on guard duties at dover in 1940. Transferred to the honourable horse Artillery, he fought at the Battle of Knightsbridge (in the Western desert), where he was captured and sent as a prisoner of war to Italy.

When Italy withdrew from the war, dad was one of many who did not hand themselves in to the Germans. By staying free, they became another thorn in the enemy’s side. he risked being shot or sent to a concentration camp, but was shielded by a brave Italian family.

he had little to thank the Germans for, yet I only ever remember him having one book of his own — rommel’s biography — and I don’t think he was alone in his respect for his most honourable adversary.

Perhaps Exeter university should be forgiven. dad won’t be offended.
